Glorious Light

7 Jul

Thank you all for your loving and supportive comments on yesterday’s post. It’s been a rough couple days but writing and sharing about Shana and connecting with old friends has made it a little more bearable. As always, your support means a lot to me.

To lift the mood a bit I figured I’d share with you some beautiful light-filled photography from the past week.

Here is one of my favorite pictures from the pillow photo shoot I did with Amie in the garden:

Doesn’t it have such a magical feel?  God I love lens flare.

I took this using a 10mm-22mm wide-angle lens and then I cropped it and enhanced the blacks a bit using Lightroom.

And here are some pictures from the Fourth of July:

The sunset Monday night was pretty out of control.  I would take a picture of the gorgeous sky and then go sit down and then two seconds later it would be even MORE gorgeous so I’d get up and take another picture and so on.  It was one of the most spectacular sunsets I’ve seen.  A nice sendoff for us as this was one of the last evenings we’ll spend on our roof in the East Village before we move to Brooklyn.

Exquisite right?  It was like a watercolor painting with the most intense color!

And finally – a few of my favorite fireworks shots.  Our view was less than stellar this year (they used to be practically right over our heads before the city moved them to the Hudson River) – but I still got some fun shots.  This first one is my favorite.  It’s a very whimsical firework right?  And I like how the Empire State Building is in the background in red white and blue.

Next Wednesday we move so our apartment is filled with boxes and I’m beginning to get a bit sad to leave this cute little one bedroom.  We’ve made a lot of memories here.  But alas – change is exciting and we’re moving on to bigger and better things.  It’s a packing extravaganza for us all weekend – so I’ll catch you next week.  xo

My Weekend Home With the Fam…

29 Mar
Whew!  It’s been a while!  I had a difficult time blogging these past several days while I was away.  I left in such a rush that I forgot the cord to my card reader (for uploading photos to my computer) and I forgot the end piece for plugging my laptop in for charging.  Yeesh.  My mind was elsewhere evidently.  But I have still been taking pictures every day!  Let’s get right to it.

"Keeping Dry at the Corner shop Cafe" - Settings: ISO 1600, f/3.5, 1/50 sec, 50mm lens

I tried this one several times last Wednesday and never quite got what I wanted.  My intention was to use an aperture which enables you to see clearly that there are people walking outside with umbrellas.  At the same time, I didn’t want the scene outside to distract too much from the wording on the window.  I also wanted to catch a nicer umbrella!  I waited and waited but almost everyone in Manhattan seemed to be carrying black umbrellas (typical) – here I caught a pale yellow one – not the best but more interesting then black I guess.

This was our awesome gift to my nephew Zach for his fifth birthday.  It is a Razor scooter and it’s wheels light up AND it shoots sparks out the back.  He wanted this SOOO bad and was beyond excited when he got to open it on Thursday night when I arrived in New Hampshire.  ”Auntie Nell!  Auntie Nell!  Will you come outside and watch me??” – he was so enthusiastic.  So, despite the snow and the cold and the dark, we went outside so he could show me his scooting skills.  He was doing little jumps and he wiped out twice, but got right back up again unscathed.  I totally think he’s going be a little skater dude.

"Playtime" - Settings: ISO 1600, f/2.5, 1/500 sec, 50mm lens

I took this Friday before I left New Hampshire.  We were playing around with the camera and my color filters.  Monique and I did a little series with the filters… we picked a color filter and then she made a face that represented how that color made her feel.  Here is the series:

Yellow = Super Super Happy

Green = Goofy/Spazzy/Happy/Dancy?

Blue = Sad

Purple = I don't exactly know what this was.

Red = Angry/Feisty/Tough

Ahhh… kids + camera = endless entertainment!

"Old Wooden Figures" - Settings: ISO 1600, f/3.2, 1/50 sec, 50mm lens

On Saturday I spent the early part of the day at the dentist (AKA – my dad), getting some impressions made.  Then my mom and I were off to the mall for some mother/daughter shopping time (our favorite).  Not so inspiring with the camera however – so it was later that night after dinner when I realized I hadn’t taken any pictures yet that day.  There are a few shelves in my parents’ living room over the fireplace that hold photo albums, candlesticks and all sorts of interesting knickknacks.  That was the first place I went for inspiration.  I remember these wooden carvings of a little old Jewish couple from when I was younger.  I guess I always had a thing for old people – because they were always sort of appealing to me.

Sunday we celebrated my grandfather’s ninety-first birthday with a delicious lunch at the Wayside Inn.  The Wayside Inn is the oldest running inn in America – since 1716.  George Washington is said to have stayed there.  It’s also supposedly haunted in two of the rooms.  Fun!  I had a hotel haunting once… but that’s a story for another day.

Anyway, this here is a picture of my grandfather (Papa) and my mom.  They’ve both got those blue eyes… the “Schneider eyes”. Too bad I didn’t get those!  My grandfather is looking pretty dapper for ninety-one – don’t you think?  He’s quite amazing actually.  He was blown away by his gift from all of us – a brand new Nikon Coolpix P500.  My dad spent some time with him yesterday learning how to use it.  I’m proud of him for being brave and having an open mind… I’m sure entering the digital age at age ninety-one is a bit overwhelming.

I got back into town on Sunday night and got to see my husband for the first time in a week!  We ordered Westville – our usual Sunday night comfort go-to.  I’ve switched it up lately though in the effort to keep on the health kick.  Instead of my usual turkey burger with cheese, which I like to douse in hot buffalo sauce (YUM), I got the simple lemon grilled chicken with a side of asparagus and a side of mushrooms.  Patting myself on the back as I type.  :)

As a matter of fact, at this very moment I’m cooking up a veggie soup from all the leftover veggies in my fridge.  I want to use everything up before we leave on Saturday so I threw in some carrots, onions, celery, parsnip, red pepper and garlic and we’ll see what happens!  I usually follow a recipe – at least a little bit – but I’m totally winging it this time.  I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Finally -

Photo 353 out of 365 – “Sunshiny Rob”

"Sunshiny Rob" - Settings: ISO 100, f/4.5, 1/250 sec, 50mm lens

I took some pictures of Rob yesterday for my portraiture class homework.  I was supposed to be playing around with light intensity and direction as well as white balance.  With this picture, I was aiming for the backlit glow and there’s a little bounced light coming off the building next to us which is lighting up the side of his face.  I like this look… love the lens flare.  As for white balance, I decided to make this picture warmer (yellower) because it emphasized the feel of the sunshine.  Rob’s so cute.

So that’s all for today.  At four I’m going to a workshop at Adorama teaching me techniques for using my camera for filming instead of stills.  Should be rather informative.  I still think it would be awesome to be Adam’s cinematographer one day on a project – right?  So better get on that.  :)

Photo 214 out of 365 – “Cat in a Second-Story Window”

10 Nov

"Cat in a Second-Story Window" - Settings: ISO 200, f/18, 1/125 sec, 50mm lens

This is the scene I stumbled upon literally one door down from my apartment building yesterday when I left to go run some errands.  I love it!  The cat is just chilling… watching the passersby, getting some fresh air.  I love his stance… and how he’s looking away from camera.  I have another one where he’s looking right at me, but this one was more powerful.  And that lens flare just makes it for me.  I knew it would be my photo of the day even though it was the first photo I took!  It just has that magic in my opinion.

Meanwhile, I seem to have a bug up my butt for some reason this week… some sort of restlessness.  I think it’s because I finished with the prints for the photography show, which was a big, challenging task – and now I’m done with it and I’m feeling like – “ok… what’s next”… you know?  This photo project and blogging is definitely both stimulating and difficult, though because I do it every day, it is starting to take on a more routine feel vs. a big exciting challenge I have to rise to.

I had the craziest most exhausting dream last night.  I was at my friend Faye’s wedding weekend (which happened already), and I was SUPER late for the brunch because I couldn’t find my hotel room.  I felt really guilty!  And panicky!  I kept running around the halls of the hotel endlessly and couldn’t remember which room I was in.  Then, after the brunch, I was supposed to pack up and catch a bus somewhere, but I kept losing my suitcases.  I gave them to an attendant and then I couldn’t remember who I gave them to – and again, I was running around in circles for what seemed like HOURS – looking for my bags – and all of the hotel employees were rude and completely unhelpful.  I was happy to wake up to the fact that it was just a dream – but it definitely seems related to this little bit of anxiousness I’m feeling this week.  Dreams are so interesting.

I have a few projects I’d like to start working on, which will hopefully ease this feeling, including re-starting a yoga practice (I just bought a beginner’s package and will go to my first class tomorrow).  And today, I’m working on a shoot for Bodega, which should be really cool.  We’re doing time-lapse photography of the Barneys holiday window being put together.  This is my first exposure to time-lapse photography, so I’m excited to learn something new!  Plus – it’s the Barneys holiday window… how fun!  I am working on this today, Friday and next Tuesday – and then Tuesday night is the big unveiling party and I believe I’ll be there shooting party footage as well.  That should be really cool!

Anyway – that’s what’s on my mind this morning.  Oh yeah, and the healthy tuna meal I made last night was NOT very good.  I didn’t like it at all.  It was too salty and needed a sweet taste to balance the salty soy… maybe honey?  The little parchment packets were fun to make though – and they made cleanup quite easy!

Here is the runner up for photo of the day, which was the last picture I took yesterday.  The cat wins… but I like this one quite a bit too.  A totally different vibe.

Adam and I had a lovely relaxing Saturday yesterday.  We sort of pretended we were on vacation – even though we didn’t leave the East Village.  We cooked a nice breakfast, went to the nursing home so Adam could meet all my little old friends, and then we spent a couple hours lying around Tompkins Square Park.  I was reading my Guide du Fromage and Adam was working on achieving world domination – playing Civilization on his iphone.  It was such a gorgeous day and the sun was shining so brightly through the trees.  I was having some fun with my camera experimenting with capturing lens flare.  This was my favorite lens flare shot of the day.  This photo is cropped a LOT – as I totally wanted to zoom in on the magic that was happening in the center of the picture.   Isn’t it beautiful?

The park was enjoyable except for a couple unfortunate incidents.  First, a bird pooped on me.  I felt something hit my side as I was lying down reading, and I looked down and there it was… poop.  Ew.  I got mad at Adam because he was barely paying attention to me as I figured out a way to remove the poop from my shirt.  He was too busy conquering the Egyptians to worry about my poop situation.  Real nice.  Then, there was this crazy man in the park who was sitting near us.  I was sort of fascinated by him at first and was enjoying observing him.  At one point, he got in this woman’s face about something and became super hostile and scary until she walked away to go tell the police.  They never came.  A little while later he started a fight with another guy.  He was seriously imbalanced – a total live wire.  I wanted to keep watching him (it was like watching a riveting movie) but I was afraid he’d see me staring and come attack me or something so I kept my face buried in my book and stole glances every couple minutes.  Thankfully he left shortly after and we finished off the rest of our afternoon at the park without incident.
